SOLO PROJECT: STUK Kunstencentrum, Leuven Belgium: Slapende Meermin, a time based site-specific architectural installation was constructed from 30 Sep -4 Oct 08 at Martelarenplein, Leuven. In juxtapositioning historical architecture with its reproduction in latest building materials, this practice lead research project looked at the nature of central urban public space and how contemporary art practice can challenge interpretation and perception and so reveal the nature of this space in new ways. Slapende Meermin references a historical building situated at the North end of Martelarenplein, Leuven. Above the ground floor window the name of a café has been carved originally into the stone lintel: A la sirene – in de Meermin. The sculpture is a full-scale copy of the façade of this building turned by 90 degrees. Appearing like a physical manifestation of the building’s shadow, the architectural structure stretches out on Martelarenplein over a length of nearly 18 meter. Slapende Meermin was supported by r.Bau Ltd Sunderland, South Tyneside and Newcastle College UK, and Wonen en Werken Leuven. It was a STUK Kunstencentrum Leuven project and part of the STUKSTART openingevent 2008. SOLO EXHIBITION: Le Terme e La Sirena, Ciocca Arte Contemporanea, Milan Italy 2009. A series of long-exposure photographs recorded during the project is exhibited from 5 Feb - 9 April 09 at Ciocca Arte Contemporanea, Milan.
